What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a non-invasive cosmetic treatment that involves using a small handheld device with tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries on the surface of the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the body's natural healing response, leading to the production of collagen and elastin fibers, which are essential for maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin.
The process of microneedling is simple. As the device is moved over the skin, the tiny needles puncture the skin's surface, creating small channels or micro-wounds. These micro-wounds signal the body to increase blood flow and generate new tissue, resulting in smoother, brighter, and more even-looking skin. Additionally, the channels created by microneedling allow for better absorption of topical skincare products, making them more effective.
One of the biggest advantages of microneedling is that it is suitable for all skin types and tones. It can be used to treat a wide range of skin concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin texture. The treatment is also relatively painless, and there is minimal downtime.
How does microneedling differ from RF microneedling?
Microneedling differs from RF microneedling in that RF microneedling uses radiofrequency energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin, causing the body to produce new collagen and elastin fibers. RF microneedling is typically used for more severe skin concerns, such as deep wrinkles, deep acne scars, and sagging skin.
What makes microneedling at Refresh different?
At our practice, we make custom serums in conjunction with microneedling. This helps to enhance the results of the treatment by addressing specific concerns that were discussed during the consultation. Our custom serums
contain a variety of beneficial ingredients, which may include: adenosine, ascorbic acid (Vit. C), exosomes (discussed in our last blog post), glutathione, hyaluronic acid, tranexamic acid (TXA), and Vit. B complex. Additionally, we can add neuromodulators (Botox, Daxxify, or Xeomin) to the serum, which, when placed topically, can help to prevent acne breakout.
What do each of these ingredients do?
Adenosine is a molecule that occurs naturally in the body and has anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. It can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin elasticity, and promote wound healing.
Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is a powerful antioxidant that can help to brighten and even out skin tone, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and protect the skin from environmental stressors like pollution and UV rays.
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that occurs naturally in the body and is involved in many vital processes, including tissue repair and immune function. When applied topically, glutathione can help to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and dark spots, improve skin elasticity, and protect the skin from environmental stressors. It can also help to brighten the skin and give it a more radiant appearance. Additionally, glutathione can help to neutralize free radicals, which are molecules that can cause damage to cells and contribute to the aging process. By reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, glutathione can help to promote healthy, youthful-looking skin.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps to keep the skin hydrated and plump. When applied topically, it can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improve the skin's overall texture and tone.
Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an amino acid that can help to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and dark spots, and improve the
overall texture and tone of the skin.
Vit. B complex is a combination of vitamins, including B3 (niacinamide), B5 (pantothenic acid), and B6 (pyridoxine), that can help to improve the skin's barrier function, reduce inflammation, and boost hydration levels.
Conclusion
In conclusion, microneedling is an effective and versatile cosmetic treatment that can improve a wide range of skin concerns, from fine lines and wrinkles to acne scars and hyperpigmentation. When used in conjunction with custom serums, the results can be even more impressive. We typically recommend 3 treatments to achieve the best results. For clients who have deeper wrinkles, acne scarring, or significant hyperpigmentation/discoloration, recommended treatments could be anywhere from 4-6 treatments.
